Song of the Day: Ellis Shares "what i know now"
Ellis, the project of Hamilton, Ontario singer-songwriter Linnea Siggelkow, recently announced that she will be releasing her sophomore album no place that feels like (due out April 26th), sharing the second single from the album: “what i know now”. The track is an insightful indie/pop song written about her experience in the music industry, with Ellis leaning into vulnerability while still maintaining a sense of light-hearted humour despite what she went through.
"when i showed this song to a close friend before it was finished, she commented on how sad it was and i found that kind of funny because although i understand where she was coming from, this song doesn’t feel sad to me. it was so cathartic to write and the cheekiest i have ever allowed myself to be. ultimately, “what i know now” is a diss track to the music industry, but even though the verses are very specific to my own experience, i think the chorus serves as this very universal refrain - that hindsight can really be such a bitch."
no place that feels like will mark Ellis’ return to her solo work after a slew of successful collaborations that include playing guitar on Ethel Cain’s critically acclaimed LP Preacher’s Daughter (Cain has also covered Ellis’ song “Embarrassing”) and co-writing a song called “Vicious Circle” with her partner Chastity’s Brandon Williams that featured City and Colour. “I am typically very insular in my writing,” she says. “I have felt very protective and sort of shy about it, but with this record, some of the things that I was working on with other people have turned into some of my favourite things I’ve ever written.”
