New Music Friday Roundup: “Horse Opera” by Tawni Bias & more
Calgary’s Tawni Bias returns with their second single this year titled “Horse Opera”, with the band leaning more into an expansive electronic sound. The single, along with “Soot”, is the first offering of new music since their 2021 release SEL Follow, a glistening folk release with elements of glitchy production techniques reminiscent of Bon Iver’s 22, A Million era. With swirling modulated vocals and ethereal melodies, it is the experimental moments that truly shine on SEL Follow. It’s exciting to see Tawni Bias embrace more of this sound with their new music, showcasing a cohesive and developed sound with massive 808s, rain sticks, trumpets, and marching snares.
“Horse Opera” is REVERIE Magazine’s song of the day. Listen down below along with more additions in our New Music Friday Roundup!
Our Sounds of Reverie playlist returns with an exciting mix of fresh tracks for your listening pleasure. Each Friday, we’ll be updating the playlist with the latest releases, and this first instalment is a stellar collection of fall’s most notable releases.
Kicking things off, we have our fall print cover star, Tea Fannie, whose empowering hip-hop anthem “BBBO” is a celebration of boss bitch business owners in Calgary and beyond. With her unapologetic energy and fierce lyricism, Tea Fannie delivers an anthem that demands attention and highlights her growing influence in the hip-hop scene.
Also featured are knitting, an indie dream-rock band whose new album Some Kind of Heaven dropped on Mint Records. The band’s atmospheric sound, with reverb-drenched guitars and introspective lyrics, continues to captivate listeners. Their ability to craft immersive, ethereal soundscapes is on full display here, making this album a must-listen for fans of indie and dream-pop. We dive deeper into their creative process in an exclusive interview featured in our latest REVERIE issue. You can read our interviews with knitting and Tea Fannie in our newest print edition of REVERIE Magazine or online here.
The theme of “Heaven” also emerges in Sunnsetter’s new album Heaven Hang Over Me, a powerful exploration of the grunge and shoegaze genres. Drawing influence from the 90s, particularly Nirvana’s In Utero (the album’s title was inspired by a misheard lyric from the track "Dumb"), Sunnsetter blends raw, emotional intensity with lush, dreamy textures. Their sonic evolution is evident here, as the band continues to refine their sound with every release.
Next up, Glixen, the Phoenix-based shoegaze band, has announced their highly anticipated sophomore EP Quiet Pleasures. The lead single “lick the star” begins with eerie silence, which builds into a whirlwind of swirling guitars, feedback, and distortion. It’s a dynamic, atmospheric track that showcases the band’s fearless approach to sound and texture. Their blend of silvery melodies and powerful distortion creates a captivating listening experience. We spoke with Glixen earlier this year at SXSW, and their interview sheds light on their creative vision and the evolution of their music. Check it out here.
The playlist also includes exciting local talent. Stucco, a post-punk band, brings their raw, energetic sound to the mix, while G.U.S.H. offers a trippy new music video for their track “Alcohol,” showcasing their experimental approach to grunge. Cheer and The Blue add their unique voices to the playlist, with tracks that span across genres and styles. Additionally, Jesse Mac Cormack, the electronic mastermind on Secret City, contributes with his new era of atmospheric sound. All this and more on our Sounds of Reverie playlist below.
