As the year draws to a close, we're celebrating the sounds that have shaped our December mood. Today’s pick of the day is none other than the emo/grunge/shoegaze powerhouse Chastity and his evocatively titled new song, “Feeling Loved, Feeling Fucked.” Delving further into the background of the track, vocalist Brandon Williams shares, “We were extremely fortunate to get to play with Sunny Day Real Estate in 2023. We were already so inspired by them, but watching them play that night felt next level.. honestly felt compelled to rip them off, to try to get as raw and as real as our heroes, and here came this song.”

A raw and cathartic exploration of longing and vulnerability, the track weaves gritty guitars, dreamy textures, and heartfelt lyrics, that swell into an authentic listening experience. Chastity’s knack for channeling emotional intensity through a lens of shoegaze melancholy is on full display here, making it a must-listen. In other exciting news, electronic pioneer Aphex Twin has unveiled a collection of rare and unreleased tracks with his new release, Music from the Merch Desk (2016-2023). The songs are compiled from his 2016-2023 sold out tour, with music only available via limited-edition singles during that period. This compilation offers a glimpse into the mind of a musical innovator, with tracks that traverse glitchy soundscapes, ambient dreamworlds, and experimental rhythms. For fans of boundary-pushing electronica, this is a treasure trove.

We’re also drawn to EKKSTACY’s latest single, “She Will Be Missed.” We were eager to hear more after catching their set at Sled Island Music Festival and it has arrived. Known for blending lo-fi aesthetics with introspective lyrics, the Vancouver artist delivers a hauntingly beautiful track that captures the ache of loss and nostalgia. This song’s stripped-back production and emotive delivery make it a standout addition to his growing discography.

On the remix front, Montreal-based electronic producer Apashe has returned with Antagonist Remixes (Part II), featuring a standout reinterpretation of his track “Kryptonite.” Remixed by Buunshin, with the ethereal vocals of Lia Kuri (lead singer of Montreal’s Afternoon Bike Ride), it transforms the original into a thrilling blend of delicate, lush harmonies and kinetic beats.

Whether you’re diving into the cathartic grunge of Chastity, losing yourself in Aphex Twin’s sonic world, or vibing to Apashe’s transformative remixes, there’s plenty to soundtrack your winter reveries. We look forward to what 2025 has in store for music fans and we hope you join us on the journey! Keep up with our latest favourites via our Sounds of Reverie playlist down below.
