Shiv and the Carvers Bring Their Riot Grrrl Spirit to Shania Twain’s “That Don’t Impress Me Much”

Toronto skate-punk roller derby band Shiv and the Carvers released a rager EP Physical Capital last October and the quartet have been stuck in our head ever since. Now they’re back with a new song (although the track is a staple in their live shows as of late) and a new band member. Spoiler alert: it’s Annie Jane Marie of now defunct band Dilly Dally - a legend in the Toronto punk scene and an all-around powerhouse rocker on the bass.

Covering Shania Twain’s country-girl anthem “That Don’t Impress Me Much”, Shiv and the Carvers put their riot grrrl spin on the track, reminding us how the Canadian icon’s lyricism can truly pack a punch and stick it to the man. Released alongside a music video, the band are seen dancing against a greenscreen with flashing images that are reminiscent of the type of videos you would see during a late-night music video binge on Much Music back in the day (hey MUCH LOUD…if that’s still a thing…this music video would fit right in). And as if the song couldn’t get any more Canadian, Shiv throws in some new entertaining one-liners to spice things up (“So what do you think?! You’re fucking Strombo or something?!”).

What first started as a solo outlet for Shiv Scott has now grown to include a group of musicians, contributing to a revamped sound that delivers hot hooks and nuanced lyrics on sex, politics, culture, and the body with aggressive prowess. It would only make sense that the band would eventually form out of the roller derby community; a home and playground for punk bands galore with Sleater Kinney, Fugazi, Green Day, and Bikini Kill soundtracking the bouts.

Check out the music video down below and watch out for more Shiv and the Carvers, whether it’s on foot or rollerskates, as you won’t want to miss it.
