Song of the Day: “Stray Animals” by SHADES

SHADES, an up-and-coming five-piece indie-rock band from the Calgary area, share their first new single of the year and it’s an energized, high-octane track called “Stray Animals”. With an irresistible hook and vocal finesse, SHADES remind me of the days when I’d stumble across a musical gem while doom scrolling on Tumblr. There is an air of freshness and mystery around the group with them only having three songs released thus far, including “In the Maze” and “Rubber Bones”, shared in 2023. With hints of The Arctic Monkeys and The Strokes, they balance their rock edge with the smoothness of bands like Djo. These sounds, like a meticulous recipe, combine to form some of the catchiest indie tunes you’ll find in the Calgary scene today.
