Brock Geiger is a name synonymous to many in the Calgary music scene, collaborating with artists spread over many different genres. I was introduced to the multi-instrumentalist and producer during Sled Island and with only surface knowledge of his artistry prior to hearing his recent single, “Steps Taken” I was genuinely taken aback when I first hit play.

Brock Geiger’s sound can be described as parallel to the likes of MGMT and Still Woozy. As a long-time indie rock/pop fan, this single transcended me into the ‘main character’ state of mind. Whenever I hear this track on my playlist, it makes me want to be in my own little world while I lip-sync to it as I walk downtown. The single makes a profound impact for those who are taking steps to reach their destination in life, whether intentionally or by the natural force of our surroundings.

I’m a huge fan of juxtapositions in music, and “Steps Taken” is a track where it makes you want to dance, but the lyrics are heavy, taking a toll on your emotions. It paints a picture that’s so loud yet so beautiful, fully captivating emotions that can only be described by words.

“Steps Taken” is about losing yourself to someone or something - how even something beautiful can tragically consume us if we're not paying attention and taking care. Brock shares, “My original version of this track was produced using just an Octatrack sampler, but I am very psyched with the way we were able to blow it up with big room sounds and real performances. Crazy fact: Matt Chamberlain tracked the drums on this in two takes!”.
