Song Of The Day: “Spirit Gum” by knitting
Montreal-based indie-rock quartet released their first single of 2024, “Spirit Gum.” The single delves into the universal experience of breakups. Highly relatable and emotional lyrics layered over dreamy guitar riffs, I have had this single on repeat and it’s officially on my current song rotation in my playlist.
I’m the type of person who would delve into my interpretation of the track itself, but I’m more drawn to the title “Spirit Gum". The product Spirit Gum is an adhesive used for special effects makeup (applying prosthetics, wigs, et cetera), but in this track’s case, it’s the once strong, now broken bond between two people. You can only repair something so many times until you reach its inevitable end. Breakups are a universal experience and Mischa Dempsey has well-conveyed these relatable emotions through their lyrics.
Accompanied with this single release is the announcement of their upcoming debut full-length album “Some Kind Of Heaven” which releases on September 6 via Mint Records. Working alongside Scott Munro from Preoccupations this upcoming knitting release will be for the books. It’s also worth mentioning that knitting plays Calgary’s Sled Island on Thursday, June 20 at the Royal Canadian Legion #1. You can grab tickets and passes here!
